Subject outline

An honours year in chemistry comprises CHE4HNA and CHE4HNB, which are taken in successive semesters. The CHE4HNA and CHE4HNB units comprises advanced coursework lectures and training in research through a research project. Each student completes a research project under the direct supervision of an academic researcher. Coursework incorporates a variety of lecture topics across a breadth of subjects such as; mass spectrometry, chemical sensors, electrochemistry, NMR, mechanistic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and organometallic synthesis.

01. Apply professional integrity and safe laboratory practices when designing and performing experiments, collecting data and reporting results, in order to satisfy the professional accreditation requirements of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
02. Apply relevant mathematical, graphical and computational methods to acquire, manipulate, interpret and evaluate chemical data and summarise results using appropriate significant figures and units.
03. Analyse and report experimental results with well supported interpretations using correctly referenced professional prose.
04. Orally present chemistry matters, supported by legitimate evidence and appropriately defended to peers or professionals
05. Demonstrate thorough understanding of "Key Principles of Chemistry" as defined by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and employ experimental methods of investigation of the defined principles.
