VET1FSV
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
This subject is designed to enhance a range of foundation academic skills for tertiary study, including academic literacy, referencing techniques, information literacy, scientific literacy and numeracy, so that key threshold concepts are achieved by subject completion. Students will develop and apply a range of academic skills designed to ensure they have the skills required to succeed in an academic environment. Students are introduced to the concept of an evidence based scientific approach, and its application from the perspective of a student and veterinary nurse. Through a work integrated learning (WIL) context, students will be exposed to applied concepts in mathematics, chemistry and biology by veterinary staff. Students will discuss, reflect upon and evaluate the use of evidence based practice during their placement in the veterinary hospital under the guidance of the academic supervisory staff.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Identify a range of relevant peer reviewed literature sources using data base searches
- Activities:
- Students undertake a workshop with the librarian where they undertake database searching using veterinary-specific databases. Students are taught how to determine search terms to acquire literature.
- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Inquiry and Analytical Skills(Critical Thinking,Creative Problem-solving,Inquiry/Research)
- Inquiry and Analytical Skills(Critical Thinking,Creative Problem-solving,Inquiry/Research)
02. Write clearly and concisely in an appropriate academic style with correct referencing

- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Literacies and Communication Skills(Writing,Speaking,Quantitative Literacy,Cultural Literacy)
03. Apply key mathematical concepts to successfully complete routine calculations required by practicing veterinary nurses
- Activities:
- During workshops, students work through authentic case scenarios, where they determine common applied veterinary nursing calculations (e.g. drug doses, IV infusion rates and dilutions).
- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Literacies and Communication Skills(Writing,Speaking,Quantitative Literacy,Cultural Literacy)
04. Demonstrate knowledge of key underpinning science concepts relevant to applied animal sciences and veterinary nursing.
- Activities:
- During workshops, students will work in teams to apply foundation knowledge in biology and chemistry to case scenarios. Assessment of these concepts is undertaken via online quizzes.
- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Literacies and Communication Skills(Writing,Speaking,Quantitative Literacy,Cultural Literacy)
05. Explain how to use an evidence based approach to enhance developing veterinary nursing protocols and procedures
- Activities:
- Students undertake a critique of a current veterinary nursing protocol and, using the PICO process, make recommendations about improving outcomes.
- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Inquiry and Analytical Skills(Critical Thinking,Creative Problem-solving,Inquiry/Research)
06. Communicate effectively, professionally and sensitively through oral presentation
- Activities:
