In this subject, the nexus between tourism and the environment, both physical and socio-cultural, is examined from economic, ecological, historical, philosophical and socio-cultural perspectives. The relationship between environmentally responsible tourism and sustainable development, in theory and practice, is critically examined. Both Australian and international case studies are used.

01. Analyse the trends affecting the natural environment with particular respect to human and tourism philosophies through a written essay
- Activities:
- Students are to write a 1500-word essay discussing and evaluating the concepts of tourism and conservation and which is more important. They need to further investigate whether management can balance both outcomes

02. Apply tourism and visitor management techniques and guidelines across a spectrum of nature-based tourism assets to control and minimise tourism impact and enhance visitor experience
- Activities:
- Analysing a case study of Uluru during tutorial time, students are asked to identify and evaluate both hard and soft visitor management techniques adopted by the national Park management. They need to further develop their own recommendations to achieve the objective of discouraging tourists from climbing Uluru.

03. Describe, in writing, some of the major theoretical concepts that are used to analyse the relationship between tourism and the natural environment
- Activities:
- Students are to participate in a visit to a nature-based tourist attraction, and upon reflection write a 500-word essay applying the theory of managing the 'visitor experience' to their own experience, evaluating those areas which can be managed, and identifying those areas which cannot

04. Discuss and orally present the ethical and other key issues that apply to the interaction of tourism and the natural environment in both developed and developing countries
- Activities:
- In groups of four, students are to give a twenty minute presentation on a relevant tourism in the environment topic, discuss related theory and apply to an appropriate example, identifying current issues.
