SOCIOLOGY OF RELATIONSHIPS
SOC2SOR
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
Relationships continue to be a central part of our everyday lives, but how are our relationships changing as a result of recent social, cultural, economic and technological transformations? In this subject, we explore the nature and dynamics of our most intimate relationships, both within and beyond the family. How has globalisation transformed the culturally specific ways in which we partner, love and reproduce? What new forms of intimacies and families are being produced by new media and migration? Who is responsible for providing care to those who need it, such as children and the elderly? In exploring the answers to these questions, we pay particular attention to the themes of continuity and change in the structures, meanings and practices of relationships as they occur around the world. This provides students with an opportunity to develop their capacity for critical analysis and reflection on themes of gender, globalisation and intimacy.
