Subject outline
This subject provides an overview of contemporary political economy. Themajor schools of political economy are examined and then used as means to understand particularly challenges and issues that confront the contemporary world. The challenges surveyed include poverty,inequality, unemployment, economic downturn and environmental sustainability. The issues covered include trade, investment, and the appropriate role for the state in the economy and society. Students are given the opportunityof choosing a particular school of political economy as a means to better understand a particular challenge/issue that is relevant to theirparticular interests and disciplinary specialisation(s). The subject offers a pluralist introduction to the study of economic phenomena from a social science perspective and is relevant to students in the social sciences, health sciences and business. POL5CPE is delivered online, however it should be noted that students have the choice of attending the weekly tutorial face to face or via the internet. Weekly consultation is also available either in-person (at Bundoora Campus) or remotely via Skype.
