Subject outline

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country and Australia's closest northern neighbour. Acknowledging the country's strategic importance to Australia's national interest, this subject introduces students to the basic features of Indonesia's political system and its immense socio-cultural diversity. After a succinct historical overview, the subject focuses primarily on contemporary events and developments that are shaping Indonesia's socio-political environment. Particular attention will be paid to political institutions, elections and party politics, the role of political Islam, and the resurgence of identity politics. A discussion of Indonesia's role in international politics and its relations with Australia will conclude the subject.
