Subject outline

In this subject students will develop their understanding of indications for appropriate drug therapies. Authentic clinical cases and enquiry-based activities are used to develop the student's understanding of prescribing issues in commonly encountered conditions in the context of evidence-based practice. The pharmacokinectics, dynamics and prescription protocols for schedule 4 drugs of interest to the podiatrist are covered in detail. The adverse effects and potential complications of these drugs are also discussed.

01. Interpret and and critique the legal, registration and guideline requirements for endorsed podiatrist prescribing.

Activities:
You should be able to recognize which medications endorsed podiatrists can prescribe and the legal requirements for each of these medications, to recognize the requirements of the Drugs Poisons Controlled Substances (DPCS) Act 1981 and Regulations 2006, The Health Professions Registration Act 2005 and The Podiatry Board of Australia Guidelines as they pertain to podiatrist prescribing, Source the major sources of evidence-based information about medicines, Undertake a medical and medication history, Write a legal prescription.

02. Integrate knowledge of the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, uses and contraindications of medicines available to endorsed podiatrists.

Activities:
To be aware of the signs of addiction, drug-drug interactions, identify possible adverse drug reactions and to integrate a patient's medical history, their presenting complaint and choice of prescribed medicines.

03. Justify and evaluate prescriptions of restricted medicines for a given patient

Activities:
To know the mode of action, indications, contraindications, main adverse effects important drug interactions, dose forms and doses of topical and injectable corticosteroids, antibiotics, antifungals, antihistaminic agents, benzodiazepines, analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.
