Subject outline

In this subject students will explore the theoretical foundations of occupational therapy, recognising the relationship between occupational participation, health and well-being. Human occupation will be examined from a life span perspective, integrating key concepts of the Model of Human Occupation (Kielhofner, 2008) and occupational science. Skills in occupational analysis, person-centred intentional communication and facilitating group occupational experiences will be developed and applied. Knowledge of research principles and methods in occupational therapy will be applied to understanding how the environment can be modified to enable change, using the process of evidence based practice.

01. Formulate an occupational profile using the theory of the Model of Human Occupation (Kielhofner, 2008) and its key components.

Activities:
Occupational profile activity, PBL tutorials, workshops, lectures & online learning resources.

02. Design, facilitate and evaluate occupationally focused group experiences using principles and processes of occupational analysis and group work.

Activities:
Occupation exchange seminars, group work seminars, occupation analysis workshop, lectures & online learning resources.

03. Illustrate and critique occupational practice skills including reflective practice, intentional communication, goal setting and documentation.

Intentional communication workshops, goal setting workshop, documentation workshop, online learning resources.

04. Appraise a recent development in occupational therapy using the five steps of evidence-based practice

Activities:
Evidence base practice workshop and environmental services in final week.

05. Summarise and compare environmental approaches to enabling occupation for specified populations

Activities:
Environmental approaches workshop and seminars in final week.

06. Analyse the relationship between occupational participation, health and well-being as experienced by yourself and others.

Activities:
Occupation profile assignment, "My Occupations" lecture and PebblePad assignment, PBL tutorials.
