Subject outline
In this subject students will develop advanced knowledge of nursing and midwifery research practice. They will examine the elements of the research process including: identification of a clinical issue or research problem, formulation of a research question or statement, research design and methods, data collection and analyses, and dissemination of results. They will also acquire skills required to conduct a literature review for research purposes and address the ethics of research. The subject is delivered via a flexible online mode (LMS) comprised of learning modules. It provides essential research knowledge that can be built upon in the Advanced Practice A and B subjects. The progression into the "Research Career Pathway" in NSM5APA and NSM5APB will be at the discretion of the Stream Coordinator. Prerequisites If the student is admitted in HMN (V1, V2, V3 or V4) or HMND then must have passed NSM4FPB and passed one of NSM4FAC, NSM4FCF, NSM4FBC, NSM4FCP, NSM4FCA, NSM4FCC, NSM4FEC, NSM4FIC, NSM4NCF, NSM4FPA, NSM4FPO, NSM4FRC, NSM4FSC, NSM4UCF or NSM4FWA. If the student is admitted in HGMID or HGMIDB then must pass NSM4MFA and NSM4MID. If the student is admitted in HMMH or HMMN, no rule applies.

01. Distinguish the important elements of the research process.
- Activities:
- The students will complete learning modules which will assist them to examine the research process from developing research questions, selection of research design, data collection, data analyses, presentation and dissemination of findings. Each module will include a number of activities and readings to assist with learning.
02. Recognise the conduct of ethical research.
- Activities:
- The students will complete a learning module which will provide a background to research ethics. They will also be expected to complete a number of written activities that address the principles of ethical research and outline the ethical processes required. Special consideration will be given to research with vulnerable groups.
03. Outline the strategies for dissemination of research.
- Activities:
- The students will be given opportunity to focus on research communication strategies and their potential to shape clinical practice.
04. Critique a body of research.
- Activities:
- The students will undertake set activities to further develop their skills to examine the literature in an area of research interest. They will apply their research knowledge to critically appraise the quality of the research they have selected.
