Subject outline

In this subject, students will develop knowledge and skills to deliver complex child, family and community nursing care and work in partnership with families facing ongoing or intermittent vulnerability. The subject is delivered via a flexible online mode comprising on-campus workshops (and/or online virtual classrooms), learning modules via LMS and clinical practicum in maternal and child health settings.

01. Undertake comprehensive family assessments and document findings in accord with relevant legislation, maternal and child health professional practice standards and program guidelines.

02. Develop and justify targeted interventions to improve long term outcomes for the child and family in partnership with a family experiencing intermittent or ongoing vulnerability.

03. Determine the communication approach required in practice to achieve effective and positive outcomes and tailor professional communication appropriately to meet the needs of children, families and other health professionals.

04. Explore alternative models of care including Enhanced Maternal and Child Health practice which may include home visiting and outreach services for complex families experiencing issues such as family violence, mental illness and substance abuse.

05. Understand legislation relevant to maternal and child health practice, including mandatory reporting requirements, and accurately assess, document and respond to identified risk of child abuse.
