Subject outline

In this subject, students will develop fundamental knowledge and skills required to care for women and their babies, to six weeks post-birth, in the midwifery care context. The subject includes a variety of normal and complex physiological, psychological and social adaptations occurring for new mothers and their families in the first six weeks postpartum. Students will learn about the role of the midwife in providing postnatal care, infant feeding, promotion and establishment of breastfeeding and the provision of education and support to empower women and their families during this period to make evidence based informed choices. This subject is delivered via a blended learning approach comprising of face to face teaching, workshops and online learning modules and is supported by clinical practicum.

01. Plan individualised care in consideration of psychosocial diversity to achieve positive outcomes for women and their families during the postnatal period

Activities:
Online E-learning; and clinical practicum in the postnatal setting will enable midwifery knowledge and skill development in planning for the individualized care for women and families in the postnatal period

02. Perform a comprehensive assessment, and provide safe and effective midwifery care to the woman and newborn during the postnatal period according to the scope of practice of the midwife.

Activities:
Online E-learning; and clinical practicum in the postnatal setting will enable midwifery knowledge and skill development in the safe performance of comprehensive assessments and provision of midwifery care of women and newborns

03. Critically analyse, evaluate and apply current evidence, guidelines and processes in midwifery in order to inform practice in the postnatal setting

Face-to-face lectures and workshops; Online E-learning; and clinical practicum in the postnatal setting will enhance understanding of the critique, evaluation, and application of current evidence, guidelines and processes in midwifery practice

04. Provide contemporary best practice information, assistance and advice to the woman on nutrition needs and feeding of her infant

Activities:
Face-to-face lectures and workshops; Online E# learning; and clinical practicum in postnatal setting will enhance knowledge and skill development in the provision of best practice information and advice on infant nutrition to women and families
