MSS3SCI
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject students will research characters and landscapes that have produced an imaginary 'Australia' on screen, and explore the issue of how identity and belonging are being re-imagined by writers, filmmakers, artists and activists. Groups will be formed in Week One to research and present audio-visual material on the issues of identity and environment that matter most to them. The class will revisit ideas of 'national character' and 'the Australian Way of Life', and students will discuss global changes in gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class and race. Students will reflect on the shift from British and European concepts of identity to multicultural and Indigenous perspectives on Australia. Participation by students in creative workshops and group projects is a feature of this subject. Small group presentations will lead to a class project using the creative skills and interests of the class in an installation/exhibition with audio, visual, performance, writing and material objects.
