SCREEN + SOUND PERFORMANCE
MSS2PER
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
The work that actors do on screen has had little attention in film studies. In this subject students will look at a wide range of screen performances, from Hollywood to French New Wave, CGI films and music videos. Lectures will use film clips to introduce key concepts, and students will explore the concepts in creative exercises, using video cameras, mobile screens, and the sound studio. In Week 1 of the Winter Intensive students will look at acting styles in comedy, melodrama, horror and musicals; they will explore the effect of the star system on screen acting, and they will do a written analysis of a star performance of a public figure. In Week 2 of the Winter Intensive students will explore voice-acting in animation and CGI films; they will also explore Kirby's acting spectrum and Labans' basic efforts by devising a live performance incorporating a music video and small screens. Students will develop group creative projects for the final assessment and presentation. No prior performance or production experience is required. This subject is a core for Creative Arts students and it is open to students from any degree or major.
