Advanced Topics in Medical Science B (MED3ATB) is a third year subject that consists of current topics in biomedical science including recent advances in pharmacology and therapeutics, cardiomyopathy, sepsis and animal models of disease; neuromuscular physiology and how perturbations in various physiological aspects result in neuromuscular disorders; the complexity in understanding and treating CNS disorders; and our current understanding of the biological processes involved in aging and their impact on health and disease.

Prerequisites Must be admitted into one of the following course codes: SBMS or SBMSSI or SBSSI and must have passed MED2BMS: OR Must be admitted into one of the following course codes SBSCW or SBMB or SBMD and must have passed MED1BSF: or Must be admitted in to LWLBM (Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Biomedicine) course.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Apply a thorough comprehension of recent advances in medical sciences suitable for future study in medicine or medical research.

Activities:
Quizzes are given in lectures as formative assessment of content knowledge Written Examination questions

02. Critically analyse clinical and research cases in medical science.

Activities:
Discussion of cases for the case study assessments will require the application of discipline specific knowledge. Written examination questions require application of knowledge in some instances.

03. Evaluate disease-related topics with application to specific cases using evidence obtained from primary information sources.

Activities:
Case Study sessions are used for guided examination and group discussion of the case in light of current knowledge. Students then research the topic further and write a fully referenced report on the assigned case topic.
