LAW AND (DIS)ORDER
LST1LOJ
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
Are there differences in how people understand and experience law? How does law relate to social order and social change? And what is justice? In this subject, students examine law and legal issues as sites of contest where conflicting interests, understandings and agendas come into play. The insights and methods of the social sciences are used to explore law's interconnection with cultural, economic and political contexts as well as its role in constituting social relations within and across communities. Attention is focussed upon three key themes: law, legal consciousness and social order; crime, criminalization and justice; and global experiences of 'the rule of law.' Included within each of these is consideration of key concepts and contemporary issues of local and global significance. This subject is the first year core for the 'Crime, Justice and Legal Studies' interdisciplinary major in the Bachelor of Arts and a first year core unit for the Bachelor of Criminology. It is also an elective for the 'Global Citizenship' Essential.
