CRIMINAL LAW, ETHICS AND ACCOUNTABILITY
LCR3ETA
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
This subject examines ethical issues in criminal law and its institutions, and raises the questions of to whom accountability is due and what mechanisms there are for accountability. The intersection between criminal law, ethics and accountability is examined through a number of case studies such as wrongful convictions, the treatment of children detained in detention centres, and police and lawyers on the wrong side of law. After completing this course, students will have gained knowledge on the mechanisms of accountability within institutions of criminal law as well be able to critically assess ethical dilemmas that may arise in the practices of criminal law.
