Subject outline
Environmental and Natural Resource Law are of increasing relevance for legal practitioners. Students will commence with a consideration of the economic and social factors that continue to shape the law in this area, analysis of regulatory approaches and basic environmental principles. Students then briefly examine principles of international environmental law and how they have influenced the development of Australian environmental law. The course examines the distribution of authority for environmental governance between the Commonwealth, State and local governments, processes of strategic environmental planning, development approvals and environmental impact assessment and environmental litigation. The final part of the course addresses a number of specific issues including: biodiversity protection, climate change, water governance and mining.
