In this subject students establish intermediate competence in speaking, reading and writing. This course enables students to practically apply their knowledge. Building on the skill sets gained in JPN2003, this subject brings the total number of characters learnt to approximately 450.

01. Interact in Japanese using intermediate grammar including doing favours, apologies, prohibition, polite requests, transitivity, honorifics and other intermediate grammar.

Activities:
Activities that promote the construction of intermediate level communication about relevant topics in the target language in pairs and in groups inside and outside of the classroom. Students are presented with authentic audio-visual material as well as listening tasks. Pair and/or self assessment activities. Revision and conversation expansion is embedded in classroom activities.

02. Learn to write and read up to 450 characters as well as read and write intermediate level sentences and paragraphs.

Activities:
A range of Japanese written passages - dialogues, passages, short stories and so on - allow students to engage with different texts in the written language. Students also engage in written composition in class as well as for assignments.

03. Participate in pairs and groups which contributes to a cohesive group dynamic and facilitates learning the target language.

Activities:
Students work with different partners in class on a regular and rotating basis. Activities include text based dialogues and tasks, peer review of PowerPoint slides and peer practice. Native speakers are invited to our classes and students are encouraged to interact with native speakers.

04. Integrate of discrete learning - the four components of language learning: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, to produce a new meaningful whole

Activities:
Manage information retrieved from lecturers, texts (aural, written, and visual) and peers, and apply one's understanding in written and spoken contexts. Reflecting on process and progress of learning, all of which facilitates the ability to complete homework and assignments in pairs or independently as required.

Activities:
Tutorial participation: to critically evaluate the cultural components of the lectures, workshops and texts. Visitor sessions are also a chance to learn about Japan, Japanese culture and norms.
