Subject outline
In this subject students first study the Nazi dictatorship in Germany: its origins in 1918-22, its rise and nature in 1930-39. Students then take charge of their own learning to shape every tutorial and two (of their three) assessment tasks, choosing to study in depth one aspect or consequence of the Nazi dictatorship in either the Third Reich itself, or else in Europe or the USA, whether during the eras of Appeasement (1935-38) or whether during the era of Total War (1939-45). Students research their topic over several weeks, receiving weekly feedback from their tutor and classmates to help them focus and improve their work before it is assessed as both a short informal talk and then as a formal academic essay. Students taking this subject can expect to hone their research and presentation skills in a subject designed to help them clarify their political values and to mentor them as capable independent learners. Lectures and the final examination place Nazism in its wider European and American political, military and ethical contexts.
