Subject outline

This subject covers the political, social and cultural history of the USA from the 1940s to today, with a focus on the period 1945 - 1991. It explores the intersection of social and economic change, political reforms and realignments, and popular culture spanning the immediate post-war, through the Cold War, through to the contemporary age. Addressing the consumerism and prosperity of the long peace of the 1940s-60s, the emergence of civil rights and identity politics, and themes of glamour, celebrity and violence, it seeks to introduce the broad contours of US history.
