This subject addresses La Trobe's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Essential. Innovation and Entrepreneurship is about using your creativity to generate new ideas, understand and solve complex problems and thrive in a fast-changing world.

Subject outline

This subject addresses the theory and application of innovation and the design thinking process to: discover and define problems, capture primary research, generate ideas, concept design, prototyping, evaluation, analysis, and maintenance. Students will gain insight into innovation by considering societal, legal and environmental impacts of their innovation; work in teams and learn how to leverage from individual strengths. They will embrace marketing stakeholder engagement, presentations and pitching of ideas during the design process to get their innovations to the intended audience. They will also gain an understanding of the feedback cycle, maintenance and documentation for the future of their product. Innovation and Entrepreneurship entails developing the ability to tackle problems creatively, generating new ideas, taking calculated risks and creating change to achieve your ambitions. Engineers Australia stage 1 competencies covered in this subject are: 1.1-1.6, 2.2-2.4, 3.2-3.6.

Activities:
Students will be introduced to varying techniques to identify problems and evaluate their value in innovation in video lectures and in workshops. Students will be required to demonstrate these techniques in their portfolio as they identify the challenge they wish to pursue. This will be assessed in the workshop, portfolio, quiz and reflective journal.

03. Collect and analyze primary research data. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.4 Discernment of knowledge development and research direction within the engineering discipline 1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline 2.4 Application of systemic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains 3.3 Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanor 3.4 Professional use and management of information 3.5 Orderly management of self, and professional conduct 3.6 Effective team membership and team leadership

Activities:
Students will be introduced to different techniques for preparing, collecting and analyzing primary research data in video lectures and workshops. Students will be required to demonstrate these techniques in their portfolio, including a plan, recording the data collected and the analysis of the data. In the workshop groups will need to develop their plan. This will be assessed in the workshop, portfolio, quiz and reflective journal.

04. Conduct effective brainstorming and selection methods to develop potential solutions to problems. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.4 Discernment of knowledge development and research direction within the engineering discipline 2.3 Application of systemic engineering synthesis and design processes 2.4 Application of systemic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains 3.3 Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanor 3.4 Professional use and management of information 3.5 Orderly management of self, and professional conduct 3.6 Effective team membership and team leadership

Activities:
Students will be introduced to different techniques for brainstorming ideas and selecting potential ideas in video lectures and workshops. Students will be required to demonstrate these techniques in their portfolio, with an idea database, evidence of selection method and justification of decisions. The workshop will include a session on brainstorming and selection. This will be assessed in the workshop, portfolio, quiz and reflective journal.

05. Investigate and explain the technical, financial, societal, legal and environmental impact and viability of innovations and ideas. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline 1.6 Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline 2.4 Application of systemic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains 3.3 Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanor 3.4 Professional use and management of information 3.5 Orderly management of self, and professional conduct 3.6 Effective team membership and team leadership
