Subject outline

Students study semiconductor device theory, device ratings and models for BJT, FET and MOSFET devices. Device biasing and operating point analysis, small signal transistor amplifier design and analysis, frequency response of simple amplifiers; gain-bandwidth product, feedback and feedback topologies, input and output resistance, frequency response with feedback. Differential amplifier configurations, common and differential mode gain and common mode rejection ratio, current sources, operational amplifiers and active filters design, and power supplies.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Analyse and solve problems relating to transistors including small signal modelling and amplifier design.

Lecture material worked examples, theoretical discussions and laboratory exercises and tutorials.

02. Construct and analyse single stage transistor amplifiers.

Demonstrate the calculation of Q-point conditions, gain, input and output resistance and bandwidth. Laboratory and tutorial demonstration.

03. Analyse amplifiers of different topologies using feedback principles

Evaluate the four feedback topologies and their performance parameters via worked examples, constructing and testing circuits in laboratory exercises.

04. Perform measurements and calculate the performance of differential amplifiers, current sources and power supplies.

Demonstrate the analysis of these types of circuits and their performance requirements in lectures, laboratory and tutorials.

05. Analyse and describe the functionality and purpose of standard filter types

Calculate the performance characteristics of standard filter types in lectures and tutorials.
