Subject outline

Inthis subject students explore how to shape a language teaching program in waysthat engage critically with specifics of the location, history and purposes ofthat program. Programs from around the world are considered. Key issues in thedevelopment of curriculum for language teaching in diverse program contexts areexplored and related to assessment and reporting of learner languagedevelopment. Students are introduced to basic principles and trends incurriculum and syllabus design from both practical and theoretical perspectives.The relationship of materials, teaching approaches and syllabus to wider issuesof the nature of language and language learning and the cultural positioning ofcurriculum are explored. Students are encouraged to consider issues in andopportunities for transformative program design in relation to their specificcontexts. Some experience of language teaching would be preferable.
