Subject outline

The aim of this Subject is to introduce the students with the current philosophy for the design of structures against loads required to resist. This is followed by presenting the behavior and detailed design of structural elements constructed from steel and timber materials to resist major actions.The design strategies presented cover action cases including bending, shear, tension and compression in addition to deflection checks for selected structural members and materials. Comprehensive structural design tasks for the covered materials and actions will equip the students with the fundamental understandings of sizing and specifying framing members for structures. Engineers Australia stage 1 competencies covered in this subject are: 1.3, 2.2, 2.3 and 3.2 (see intended learning outcomes for details).

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Apply the limit state design method in structural design. EA stage 1 competencies include: EA stage 1 competencies covered include: 1.3 In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline. 2.3 Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes.

Activities:
These fundamental ideas and their application to behavior modelling are introduced in lectures. Reinforcement and further exploration of these occurs in tutorials with practice problems. Assessment is in the final exam

02. Calculate structural load combinations. EA stage 1 competencies covered include: 2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources. 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains.

Activities:
Design requirements are taught in lectures and reinforced in tutorial and laboratory classes. Reinforcement of this teaching is through practice problems, competency in solving these is demonstrated through assignments and exam questions.

03. Analyse the behavior of structures under load combinations. EA stage 1 competencies covered include: 2.3 Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes. 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains

Activities:
Students are required to attend and perform laboratory work and demonstrate competency in report writing and solving practice problems.

04. Apply mechanics of solids principles to design structural members. EA stage 1 competencies covered include: 1.3 In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline. 2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.

Activities:
Methodologies introduced in the lectures are practiced in the workshops. Students are required to demonstrate competency in solving practice problems and exam questions.

05. Critically review and utilize design standards for conducting loading calculations and structural design tasks. EA stage 1 competencies covered include: 2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.

Activities:
Methodologies introduced in the lectures are practiced in the workshop.

06. Conduct bending test in the laboratory on a scaled steel and timber beams, observe their behavior under load, compare measured data with the predictions of Australian Standards AS4100 and AS1720 and published research, and critically review the findings. (Includes EA stage 1 competency: 2.3, 3.2) Includes EA stage 1 competency: 2.3 Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes. 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains.
