Subject outline
This subject provides an informative and fun introduction to two of the major languages of the Ancient Mediterranean world: Latin and Ancient Greek, and looks at where they turn up in the modern world from our own university's 'Agora' to the Latin spells of the Harry Potter series. We explore the fascinating worlds of these languages, both their cultural contexts and their specific vocabularies and grammatical structures. Students discover the origins of words associated with political structures ('democracy', 'senate', 'fascism'),sport (the Olympics), the law ('alibi'), science, medicine and mythology. We trace the historical development of English to discover why this should be. The'children' of both languages (Romance languages and Modern Greek) are also investigated, as well as their 'parent' language, Proto-Indo-European.The subject also introduces students to the technical vocabulary of grammar so that they are well prepared to begin learning either of the ancient languages. It will lead to improved written and oral skills, through raised awareness of the components of a sentence and a deeper command of vocabulary.
