Subject outline

In this subject students will further develop their knowledge and application of research and scholarship in a veterinary nursing context. Students are introduced to basic quantitative and qualitative research methods and the concept of validity assessment via basic statistics. This subject teaches students how to search veterinary nursing databases to find relevant published peer reviewed literature, which they then critically assess. Students are supported to further develop their writing skills either through the task of writing a critical literature review, or preparing a case study at a level suitable for publication in a veterinary nursing journal.

01. Outline the background, rationale, key principles and processes of evidence-based practice

Activities:
Students undertake readings on evidence-based practice, and then discuss this area with their peers during a workshop. They then discuss the benefits and challenges of applying the principles of evidence-based practice in veterinary nursing practice, both locally and internationally.

02. Critique the design, method and statistical analyses used in a range of published research studies

Activities:
Students learn about research design and methods, including quantitative and qualitative, and some basic forms of statistical analysis through pre-workshop readings and videos. They then discuss these during workshops, and practice applying some of the basic techniques. Student groups then work together in a workshop to critique the design, method and statistical analyses on a number of published research studies. Finally, individual students critically review a piece of published peer reviewed literature.

03. Utilise systematic search methods to find appropriate and relevant peer-reviewed journal articles

Activities:
A librarian runs a workshop helping to guide students in appropriate systematic search methods to source peer-reviewed journal articles. Students then practice this approach, when searching for articles for their case study/literature review, and can ask for assistance from the librarian and/or tutors.

04. Create an evidence-based piece of literature, written in a concise and genre-appropriate manner, suitable to submit for publication in a peer reviewed journal

Activities:
Students are supplied links to a number of examples of published case studies and literature reviews, and read these prior to their workshop. They are also given a link to the requirements by a number of journals for the requirements for case studies and/or literature reviews to be suitable for publishing. Students choose the journal and article type that they wish to emulate, and plan their writing accordingly.

05. Critically evaluate and provide constructive feedback on written articles

Activities:
Students with a team work together during a workshop to offer constructive feedback on the draft article written by each team member. Tutors are available to assist with any questions the group may have.

06. Construct robust recommendations or solutions to moderately complex veterinary nursing problems

Activities:
Student as part of their creation of their evidence-based piece of literature, considers how the evidence they have found could be used to offer recommendations or solutions to veterinary nursing challenges
