Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject examines the place and position of young people in our society from a sociological perspective. It explores what it means to be a 'citizen', the benefits and drawbacks of youth social capital, how and why young people create subcultures and the role of youth policy in young people's lives. Students will look at questions like: What do we mean by 'place' and how is 'identity' tied to it? Is agency a combination of social and individual influences? How do institutions influence the opportunities available to young people? What roles do peers play in the life of young people? Finally, this subject also examines important social issues affecting young people today, such as changing family dynamics, education, employment, technology, homelessness and youth development.
