Subject outline

This subject will enable College of Science, Health & Engineering students to undertake a discipline specific learning experience in an international context. Students will participate in a clinical, work integrated learning, or other international learning experience that will allow them to gain experience and knowledge of their discipline in a culturally and professionally new environment. This subject is also available for International Science, Health and Engineering students undertaking a clinical or other learning experience in Australia.

Activities:
Demonstrate - basic communication skills in unfamiliar situations in a culturally sensitive way. Negotiate, collaborate and consult with colleagues and peers as required. Maintain accurate and appropriate documentation as required in an appropriate time-frame.

02. Demonstrate professional attitudes and organisational and time management skills.

Activities:
Attend and participate in clinical placement, work integrated learning and/or learning experience as scheduled.

03. Critically apply professional practice in a range of contexts including the application of relevant policies, procedures and guidelines.

Activities:
Participate in the international experience and critically reflect on the role of your discipline in that context.

04. Reflect on the impact of different contexts and cultural experiences in developing professional identity.

Activities:
Identify your own strengths and weaknesses and reflect on your own performance against personal learning goals and appropriate standards of performance, and work towards addressing these. Demonstrate an ability to adapt your own performance in response to self-evaluation. Actively seek to engage in opportunities to update and broaden your own knowledge and skills in response to personal learning goal. Examine the similarities and differences in professional practice in relation to the respective professional guidelines for your discipline between Australia and the location of the international experience.

05. Compare service delivery models in other settings with the Australian service delivery model with regard for cultural differences.

Activities:
Explore the model through your own practice, engagement with colleagues and research of that Government's/ Institution's guidelines for service delivery where possible. Identify the professional constraints and benefits of this service delivery model compared with the Australian model. Examine the broader professional discipline system in this environment and the impact of cultural practices on the discipline model and professional practice. Identify the facilitators and barriers that impact on your discipline in this particular context.
