Subject outline

This subject will provide students with an in-depth understanding of a range of different approaches to psychological intervention for psychological and behavioural problems. The main focus will be on psychological interventions for individuals but the subject will also explore group and public health interventions designed to change behaviour. The theoretical and empirical support for different intervention strategies will be explored and students will have opportunities to analyse the merits or otherwise of particular approaches. Students will learn to apply basic listening skills required in helping situations and explore effective strategies to motivate behaviour change.

01. Describe effective counselling processes and apply fundamental counselling skills. (discipline specific knowledge, ethical awareness and professional conduct, creative problem-solving skills)

Activities:
Attendance at lectures and participation in experiential exercises in a tutorial will be the main learning activities. Formative assessment will be provided through feedback from peers and the tutor in the tutorial. Summative assessment will be assessed in brief exam questions.

02. Construct cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) tasks to facilitate behaviour change based on CBT theory. (Writing, discipline specific knowledge, creative problem-solving skills, and inquiry/research skills).

Activities:
Attendance at lectures, participation in group discussions and experiential exercises tutorials and a behavioural monitoring task will be the main learning activities. Formative assessment will be provided through feedback on a 500 word analysis of the students' self-monitoring experience and tutorial feedback. Summative assessment will be derived from responses to brief exam questions.

03. Critically evaluate the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of a range of specific psychological intervention techniques for individuals. (Writing, inquiry/research, critical thinking, creative problem solving and discipline specific skills).

Activities:
Attendance at lectures, participation in group discussions and evaluations of DVD presentations of interventions and completion of a 2000 word critique of particular intervention approaches for specific psychological problems will be the main learning activities. Formative and summative assessment will be provided through feedback on the 2000 word essay. Summative assessment will also be derived from responses to brief exam questions.
