Subject outline

In this subject, students will be introduced to physiological control and the body systems involved in control and the relevant pharmacology. The subject will cover receptor kinetics, nerve impulse propagation and transmission, the operation of the nervous and endocrine systems (with special emphasis on the autonomic nervous system) and the pharmacology of drugs acting at synaptic and neuromuscular sites. The practical component will introduce the use of physiological equipment, and ethical considerations for animal and human experimentation.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Illustrate, through worked examples, how drugs may interact at the pharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and physiological phase

Activities:
Drug interactions are taught in lectures and worked examples are undertaken in tutorials. Assessment is via an exam.

02. Describe how drugs interact at the cellular level to alter the operations of the nervous and endocrine systems.

Activities:
The operation of the nervous and endocrine systems are explained in lectures and consolidated in practicals and tutorials. Assessment is by exam and prac interview.

03. Complete scientific experiments that examine aspects of drug interactions with human physiology; working within OHS guidelines, expressing ethical awareness, interpreting data, recognizing methodological issues, identifying the theoretical basis for the experiment, and communicating observations and results

Activities:
OHS guidelines are demonstrated during pracs, assessed during prac interview.
