Subject outline

In this subject students will research the characters and landscapes that have produced an imaginary 'Australia' on screen. Focusing on ideas of 'national character' and 'the Australian Way of Life', students will discuss gender, sexuality, ethnicity and race as aspects of both national and global identity. Small group presentations will investigate changes in character types and landscapes. Students reflect on the shift from British and European concepts of identity to multicultural and Indigenous perspectives on place and belonging. Active participation by students in weekly lecture/workshops and group projects is a feature of this subject.
