Subject outline
Mentoring and advising are processes that enable both individuals and organisations to achieve their full potential. As such, mentoring and advising are enterprise skills highly valued in the workplace. In this subject, you will develop skills in being able to advise and mentor students through a three-day workshop and apply those skills to advising and mentoring a number of commencing students as a Peer Learning Adviser (PLA). The workshop will provide you with a detailed understanding of the process of learning and equip you with strategies to engage and communicate with your mentees. You will also learn how to ask probing questions and provide effective feedback in one of two specialist areas: writing or numeracy. You will complete 100 hours of service as a PLA, mentoring 24 commencing students. In completing this subject you will not only enhance the learning experience of fellow students, but also enhance your own communication, interpersonal and motivational skills.
