Feminism continues to fuel movements for social justice, yet its grounding in the category of 'woman' is constantly challenged. In this subject we explore how the interests of non-Western women and men, as well as sexually marginal and gender diverse people, contest the dominant liberal feminism of public discourse. Ideas emanating from poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, queer theory and critical race theory have challenged some of the positions taken by earlier forms of western feminism, prompting continual renewal in feminist projects. We will use a range of texts to examine such contemporary questions about gender, sexuality, culture and power, and ask if the recent emergence of intersectional feminism can rise to new challenges in the politics of difference and inequality.< p>
