Subject outline

This subject provides you with an understanding of the fundamental concepts and importance of finance and suitably prepares you for future finance subjects within a major stream or degree program. You will examine the nature of the financial environment and the types of financial decision-making required from both a business and individual perspective. You will further develop an understanding of the concept of the time value of money, methods of valuing various financial assets such as shares and bonds, and methods of project evaluation. Finally, you will consider the trade-off between risk and return in relation to financial assets and its importance to understanding modern portfolio theory, and the cost of capital for a firm. You will also be introduced to the Efficient Markets Hypothesis and financial options.
