Subject outline

In this subject you will investigate the influence of individual variation, environmental stress and ergogenic aids on exercise training and performance. You will evaluate normal and abnormal, acute and chronic responses to exercise, with reference to individual determinants of the participant and environmental stress. In addition, you will evaluate nutritional interventions and ergogenic aids to enhance physiological adaptation, exercise capacity and performance.

01. Assess acute and chronic physiological responses to exercise to determine normal and abnormal patterns of responses.

Activities:
Lectures: normal and abnormal responses to exercise, case studies to include cardiovascular, respiratory, immunological, hormonal and metabolic responses to exercise and overtraining. Practicals: comparing cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic responses to exercise with expected values to identify health and/or fitness concerns and develop applicable exercise programs to facilitate improvements. 02. Evaluate the effects of environmental stress on exercise performance and adaptations to exercise training.

Activities:
Lectures: actual and simulated altitude, hot and cold environments, case studies to include the influence of environmental conditions on performance and physiological adaptations, including heat and altitude comparing effects of simulated hot and humid environments on exercise responses and use of cold water immresion for recovery. Online discussions / forums / quizzes demonstrating and applying knowledge.

03. Critically evaluate the use of nutritional interventions and ergogenic aids with reference to safety, physiological adaptations to training and exercise performance.

Activities:
Lectures: fluid balance, optimum nutrition, case studies to include the evaluion of nutritional interventions (including fluid, macronutrient and micronutrient) and ergogenic aids (including creatine, bicarbonate, glycerol loading, anabolic steroids, autologous blood transfusion) on exercise performance, recovery and physiological adaptations. Practicals: Physiological investigation of performance aids. Online discussions / forums / quizzes demonstrating and applying knowledge.

04. Evaluate the physiological principles and biochemical pathways related to energy metabolism, muscle fatigue and soreness.

Lectures: case studies to include older athletes and the influence of exercise training on people with chronic disease to include cardiac disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, renal disease and metabolic syndrome. Online discussions / forums / quizzes demonstrating and applying knowledge.
