Subject outline

In this subject you will learn how to identify and describe the normal anatomy and physiology of the human body including skeletal, muscular, lymphatic, circulatory and nervous systems with emphasis on vessels associated with the face and mouth. In particular, you will be able to use appropriate terminology to effectively communicate information related to anatomy of the head and neck. This subject also focuses on the general principles of human physiology and connections made with the head/neck and the oral cavity. You will be introduced to the cellular basis of life, cell structure, inclusions, membranes, junctions, cells working as communities, epithelial and connective tissues, nervous and muscular tissues and selected organs - skin, nerves, thyroid, blood vessels, trachea, lung and gut. Principles of anatomy will be introduced and applied to the anatomy of the head and neck relevant for dentistry/oral health science, including the TMJ. You will also gain insight into the critical role saliva plays in the maintenance of oral health.
