Subject outline
This subject introduces students to the society, literature and art of ancient Rome through its major historical and literary figures such as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Augustus, Nero, Virgil and Ovid. We look at slavery, gender roles and entertainment such as ancient comedy and the gladiatorial games. While the city of Rome is the focus of our study, we consider the impact of Rome#s vast empire and the significance of its history of military conquest. We also look forward to the way in which Rome is now depicted on screen and in novels and video games, such as HBO's series Rome, Robert Graves' I, Claudius and the video game Rome: Total War. Students choose a modern text that that represents the ancient Roman world for detailed study throughout the semester.
