PROTEIN CHEMISTRY

BIO5PRO

2018

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject will provide students with the opportunity to enhance their practical laboratory skills through a variety of protein chemistry applications. A combination of practical classes and workshops will enable students to understand and carry out laboratory techniques to purify and characterise protein preparations. In completing tasks for this subject, students are expected to develop skills in critical thinking, data analysis, teamwork and scientific communication.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Demonstrating an understanding of the experimental protocol.

Activities:
Each student will be allocated a protocol that will be used in the practical class. Students are required to research and develop an understanding of their protocol. For assessment, students must produce a learning resource that serves as an instructional guide for carrying out the procedure.

02. Develop and convey an understanding of protein chemistry techniques

Activities:
Students will complete worksheets and quizzes that contain a combination of questions about key concepts covered in lectures, workshops and practical classes. Students will have the opportunity to discuss these problems during class. These activities are submitted for assessment and feedback.

03. Prepare, perform, interpret and explain an experiment

Activities:
Students will use allocated protocols to carry out laboratory work. Experimental data and results will be reported through an individual assignment and a group oral presentation. Students are expected to accurately explain the purpose of the experiments and the outcomes observed.

04. Practice gathering and reporting information from published literature and scientific resources

Activities:
Students will produce a product information sheet that has background information for the protein they worked on in the laboratory. Workshop activities will focus on collating information from a variety of scientific resources and documenting this information in a concise manner.

05. Demonstrate effective collaboration and organisational skills through contributing to group work

Activities:
At the beginning of this unit, students will be assigned to project groups. Students will be required to work collaboratively to compile results from their laboratory work. The success of the group work will be measured during the presentation of the group's data.

06. Compile and present experimental data in a format appropriate for publication

Activities:
Students will complete a short activity on how to compile and present scientific data. Feedback from this exercise will assist students in improving their final product information sheet. The product information sheet will resemble that of a commercially available protein and should be professionally researched, written and formatted.

Assessments

Assessment elementComments%ILO*
3 x online quizzes (900 word equiv total)Students will be required to perform pre-prac reading and complete an LMS quiz (5% each) after each workshop. The workshop activities are designed to help students build on their knowledge of concepts and methods that will be practiced in laboratory sessions.1501, 02, 03
1 x 2000 word written examinationIn a 2 hour written exam, students will be assessed on their scientific knowledge, analysis of results and understanding of the methods and concepts encountered during the subject.3001, 02, 03
1 x group oral presentation (500 word equiv per student)In a group, students will prepare a presentation containing detailed explanations of the experiments carried out in the laboratory over the course of the subject alongside an accurate analysis of the results observed. Students will receive a group mark based on presentation, scientific accuracy, and an even contribution from team members.1002, 03, 05
3 x 300 word written reports on data analysis (900 word equiv total)Students must complete 3 worksheets (5% each) that largely focus on data analysis. Students will be assessed on their theoretical understanding of protein chemistry techniques and their ability to evaluate experimental protocols and results.1501, 02, 03
One multimedia presentation and One presentation on scientific data exercise (500 word equiv each)Students will produce an instructional guide in the form of a narrated PowerPoint presentation. The presentation should be no longer than 3 minutes and will account for 10% of the subject mark. Students will complete a results presentation exercise to practice preparing figures and writing figure legends for publication. Students will receive written feedback that will assist them with later assessment ite2001, 02, 03, 04
1 x 750 word product information sheetStudents will produce a Certificate of Analysis that will contain background information for the protein they have characterised in the laboratory together with the results of the experiments carried out. The final assignment should be researched, written and formatted as if it were a professional document.1003, 04, 06
