Subject outline
The audiological assessment of young children requires specialised clinical knowledge and skills. In this course, you will be provided with a broad understanding of the principles underlying the assessment and clinical management of neonates, infants and children under 5 years of age. Through lectures, you will learn about normal child development, causes of hearing loss in children, and the impact of childhood hearing impairment. The course will include newborn hearing screening programmes, aimed at identifying hearing loss as early in life as possible. You will learn about behavioural assessment techniques used in screening and diagnostic paediatric audiology. Through a series of workshops, you will develop skills in behavioural audiological assessments including Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) and Play Audiometry.

03. Practically apply the theoretical underpinnings of a range of paediatric hearing assessments, including behavioural response audiometry (BOA), visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA), and play audiometry.

Integrate information from subjective reports, research publications, ethical considerations and behavioural test results, and appropriately interpret the results of these tests to differentially diagnose various hearing disorders in infants and young children as well as make sound clinical recommendations.
