Subject outline

This course explores the history, music, and storytelling of popular Hindi cinema, otherwise known as Bollywood. Bollywood films, recognisable by their song-and-dance numbers, deployment of international mega stars, and mashup of various film genres, are among the most widely watched films in the world. We will watch some of the most significant films of the Indian post-independence era, paying special attention to films that engage major historical and cultural moments. Alongside key readings in theory and method, we wil interpret the films as cultural texts. We will ask why these film narratives are so effective, and consider how films reflect and shape the postcolonial Indian culture in which they are created.
