Subject outline

This subject introduces the principles of microbiology and genetics relating to horses. Students will learn foundational biological concepts and their application to equine management. Topics will include the the role of micro-organisms in the environment and disease, the identification and effective bio-security strategies for key zoonotic pathogens of horses including Hendra virus and develop and understanding of the methods of controlling microbial growth and the application to feed processing, equine disease control and soil fertility. This subject introduces qualitative and quantitative genetics and their application to the breeding of horses is explored. Students will develop their laboratory skills in the safe handling of microorganisms and biological specimens.
