2017

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

Cultural & Theoretical Studies 1 provides a broad range of visual arts students with a critical and theoretical context in which to situate their studio practice. Students will be exposed to a range of texts, including art historical, cultural, theoretical and philosophical as well as key artists writing about these subjects. The focus of this subject will involve exploring, analysing, and appraising how these texts and the associated key theoretical paradigms relate to and inform the production and display of visual arts practice. Students build from the basics of academic scholarly research skills and develop how these skills apply to the study of visual arts. Developing skills in analysis, evaluation and communication (reading, writing, discussing) will enable students to understand and process complex ideas associated with theoretical positions relating to visual arts practice.
