Subject outline
In this subject students are provided with experiential learning opportunities to further integrate theory with practice, to demonstrate appropriate professional relationships, and gain working knowledge of organisational contexts. Through this professionally supervised practice experience students will be provided with constructive feedback on their performance and will be challenged to critically self-reflect on their effectiveness. Students will have opportunities to further develop skills in basic interviewing, assessment and intervention processes required for practice along with skills in research. Professional competencies will be developed across seven key learning areas and will be assessed against the standard of competency at a beginning level with support.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Competently perform a range of social work tasks at the level expected of a new graduate by applying social work knowledge and skills in an integrated manner.
- Activities:
- Students will undertake social work assessment, intervention, referral and evaluation tasks with minimal support from the Field Educator. They will have the opportunity to work collaboratively in professional teams and utilise research skills and knowledge to identify researchable issues within practice. Throughout their placement students will utilise and demonstrate clear and effective inter-personal communication skills.
02. Critically evaluate social work practice strengths and identify future learning needs/goals as a first year social work practitioner
- Activities:
- Through effective use of supervision students will be given opportunities to demonstrate a process of critical self-reflection and recognise and understand their own assumptions and values and how these may impact on practice.
03. Evaluate the impact of organisational factors upon practice.
- Activities:
- During placement students will describe some of the current debates, social issues/and or politics that influence the placement field of practice. They will also be given opportunity to reflect on how organisational policies and procedures including duty of care, risk-management, and the legal rights of consumers have influenced their practice
04. Identify a range of their professional skills and how these apply to the AASW Practice Standards.
- Activities:
- While on placement, students will Identify professional behaviours that have enhanced their social work practice and describe which professional values and ethics informed their professional practice. Students will also articulate specific skills and knowledge learning goals for their first year as a social work practitioner.
