This subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential. Sustainability Thinking entails deep appreciation of how the choices we make affects the natural, economic, social, political and cultural systems — now and in the future.

Subject outline

The first three weeks of semester focus on introducing, and developing your understanding of politics, philosophy and economics. Weeks four to nine explore the strong interrelationships between politics, philosophy and economics (PPE). Weeks ten to twelve apply an explicitly PPE perspective to the challenges of economic sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability. This subject is of particular relevance to students enrolled in La Trobe's Politics, Philosophy and Economics degree, but is open and accessible to any student who is interested in understanding these three disciplines, their interrelationships, and their application to real-world policy challenges. This subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential. Sustainability Thinking entails a deep appreciation of how the choices we make (including the intellectual choices we make when we analyse the world) affect the sustainability of natural, economic, social, political systems.

03. Apply a PPE perspective to analyse how public policy can respond to a particular challenge to the sustainability of socio-economic and or environmental systems and then report the results in written tasks and tutorial discussions.
