Subject outline
This subject examines the major principles and theoretical issues involved in the development and application of strategic spatial planning with an emphasis on strategy for regions and cities to address problems, to cope with change, and as a means of setting future directions. The concepts and historical origins of comprehensive city wide regional planning are contrasted with current modes of strategy development and strategic intervention as part of a broader more inclusive style of strategic planning. A series of metropolitan strategies are examined and evaluated for their effectiveness. The capacity and legitimacy of strategic spatial planning is assessed in the context of contemporary policy regimes and modes of regional governance.
