Subject outline
In this subject, students will study the properties, synthesis and applications of materials structured on the nanometer scale. Advanced processing methods for synthesizing nanomaterials ranging from single nanoparticles to three-dimensional nanostructures will be discussed and explored practically. The methods that will be studied include lithography, chemical and physical deposition, and self-assembly. An understanding of these methods will be developed with consideration of relevant thermodynamic and kinetic theories, and how material performance and device and device functionality arises from the controlled manipulation of nanostructure. The subject will also survey current and emerging applications of nanomaterials including nanofluidics, optoelectronics and bio/medical sensing devices. Together with PHY2MOD, PHY2MAC, PHY3SYN and PHY3LAB, this combination will bring together discipline based knowledge and skills which will prepare students for a career in nanotechnology related industry, or for honours and post-graduate research studies in physical sciences.

- Concepts and problem-solving techniques are introduced on-line and modeled in lectures where solutions to selected problems are derived. Similar problems are in the final exam.

02. Critically review and analyse research data and interpret the results with reference to the scientific literature in order to develop appropriate conclusions and convey these in an appropriate manner in a written report. Describe and explain, in appropriate written and verbal style, the findings from laboratory experiments performed by the student.
- Activities:
- Students prepare an individual report for each of four experiments in the style of a professional research journal article which accurately and ethically describes the experiment, its findings and draws appropriate conclusions. Students are provided with a template on which to base their report.

03. Design and perform simulations and experiments related to the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials using modern laboratory techniques, equipment and software which produce conclusive and accurate results.
- Activities:
- Students conduct, in small groups, four extended laboratory experiments of 6 hours duration each in close consultation with a staff demonstrator, who assists them in the design and conduct of the experiment.
