Subject outline

This subject explores ancient Greek drama in its artistic, social, historical and political context through the study of ancient evidence and modern performance of the plays. Focussing on the tragedies and comedies of 5th century BC Athens, students will examine not only the texts of the plays themselves, but also the archaeological evidence for theatre structures, visual evidence for costume and stage craft, philosophical texts, the competitive performance environment of state religious festivals, the composition of the audience and the historical and political context which informed the mythological and other storylines. The subject aims to provide in-depth understanding of the plays and the nature of acting in antiquity not only through close readings of the texts, but also through a performance of a play or excerpts as the culmination of the experiential learning experience. Through the design and execution of a theatrical event, students will gain skills in team work, oral and visual presentation and event management.
