This subject explores current topics and debates at the cutting edge of Jurisprudence. Jurisprudence, or the philosophy of law, is the critical examination of the fundamental ideas, values and principles that underpin and shape legal thinking. This subject approaches these issues through in-depth examination of specific issues such as whether there is a right to disobey the law, whether animals have rights, whether historical injustices can be remedied, whether criminal justice has a place for mercy, whether there is a right to offend, among others. Students will engage with the issues at an advanced level through reading and critiquing a combination of contemporary academic writings and real world examples drawn from case law, legislation, current debates and history.

01. By the end of this subject, students will be able to demonstrate an advanced understanding of and critical engagement with the jurisprudential issues covered in the subject.
- Activities:
- In seminar sessions students will be discussing jurisprudential issues in structured small group and large group discussions. Writing assignments will require students to write essays that directly engage with fundamental jurisprudential issues.

02. By the end of this subject, students will be able to produce academic writing that presents clear and logical arguments informed by well-developed skills in legal research.
- Activities:
- Writing assignments will require students to use their legal research skills (i.e. finding relevant materials, textual analysis and interpretation, and legal argumentation) to write clear and well-argued answers to the questions posed.
