Subject outline

Students will explore the reporter's role in factual production across broadcast and electronic media. Topics covered will include research for audio visual media, writing for radio, television and online formats, interviewing techniques, script editing, developing talkback topics for radio, and principles of presenting for radio and television. As part of the process, students will be expected to undertake story design and conception, research, script editing, review and analysis. In this subject, we aim to provide students with a strong grounding in broadcast writing skills, as well as an appreciation of the multiple skills required by the convergence of television, radio, press and internet in the current media environment.

02. The ability to develop sophisticated longer-form radio story plans to a high level for a specific broadcast outlet. This involves identifying and researching original story ideas, identifying and writing questions for interview subjects, and presenting a developed research guide in an online format.

Activities:
Writing for radio exercises, research exercises in seminars and for written assessment tasks, development of critical story ideas, feedback on draft story ideas; example-based teaching used to help students formulate and structure assignment tasks. Guest lectures from the presenter or producer of the program for which the assignment is designed.

03. The ability to research and write introductions and questions for profile interviews with politicians in a radio format. This requires students to demonstrate highly advanced research skills, a knowledge of the strong contemporary political system and current affairs, as well as the requirements of developing material for a specific radio program, including an awareness of the program brief and audience

04. The ability to write news stories in a TV news format. This includes identifying and analysing the appropriate weighting of story angles, writing script links and introductions for journalists and presenters, identifying appropriate visual materials, and ensuring the style of the item is consistent with that of the designated news broadcaster (for instance, the ABC)
