Therise of militant Islamist groups is one of the defining features of late moderngeopolitics. In this course, students critically engage with the history ofreligious fundamentalism: as ideology, social movement, and political force.Students will research the changing place of religion in modernity, the sourcesof religious knowledge, and the social, political and cultural drivers ofreligious change through diverse fundamentalisms such as in ProtestantChristianity, Islam, and New Atheism. Students will analyse the global flow ofideas through international religious networks, and study the dynamics ofreligious movements in late modernity through a range of themes that havebecome touchstones for conservative religion. These may include evolution,textual criticism, abortion, homosexuality, women's movements and campaigns forreligious freedom. Through the subject, students will develop criticalunderstandings of global religious diversity and develop skills to interacteffectively in global contexts of religious difference.
